Gestalt Presents: The Future Is Beautiful 2.14.2009

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

picture-4The Future Is Beautiful is a monthly event dedicated to bringing you the best electronic music that NYC has to offer. Our approach is simple and two-fold: by focusing on local talent rather than a genre or style, we shed a spot light on, and provide a forum for the variety of producers, performers and musicians that emanate from NYC. Additionally, we partner with like minded organizations from other urban centers, such as Philly, London, Chicago, Boston, LA and Berlin to provide a portal from which artists from those cities can connect to and perform for an open minded and supportive audience here.

For our inaugural event this Valentine’s Day we have created a very special and romantic evening. To begin the evening we have decided to forgo music (just this once) and show a cinematic master piece by Fellini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federico_Fellini), called ‘Cabiria’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFU22LC3hDw). During the show we will be serving dinner from a limited menu that will be available at the venue. The food is wonderful and from the venue’s restaurant, Coco66.

Following TFIB Cinema we have selected a wide range of music to ‘get you in the mood’. Starting off we have Alexander Basset (recently transplanted from Chicago) beginning the evening out with some slow house and new disco. Following up Alex is NYC’s long time resident and TFIB resident Patrick Gallagher, representing NYC with some deep and minimal house and techno. After Patrick we have fellow TFIB resident, Isomer Transition, performing his first Live PA in NYC in over a year. With an inclusion on an upcoming Fabric mix CD, and DJ support from the likes of Claude VonStroke, Troy Pierce and Ryan Elliott, 2009 is off to a good start for Isomer. Following Isomer’s inaugural 2009 Live PA we have two of New York’s underground DJ scene’s rising stars to finish off the night, Kendra ‘You know you know me so I don’t need a last name, fool!’ (of Wax Doll’s fame), and the in-demand Jon Schmidt. Kendra has promised to bring the dance party with a DJ set of infamous french house, and Jon will anchor the night with some deep and heady minimal.

To make sure that the night sounds *proper* we are bringing in some amazing sound reinforcement from our friend Nick down in Philly. He has been doing sound here in NYC lately at the Bunker, House and Home, with Jason Carter and has an amazing sound system. Part of the Future being Beautiful includes enough bass, so we are being sure to bring it.

NYC NYE Happening 2008 / 2009

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

I know, late notice yet again. I think that is fine as this is for all those who are looking for an alternative to the traditional NYC NYE debauchery. I know that I am looking for one. And, keeping in tradition with my 2008 mantra of free IS good, tonight’s event is 100% free.

What: NYE NYC Happening
Cost: F-R-E-E
When: 8pm-2am
Where: Coco66, 66 Greenpoint Ave.
How: G train to Greenpoint Ave, walk two blocks towards the water. #66 on the left.
Directions: http://tinyurl.com/nycnye0809
Visuals: Saturated and Contrasted Series 1: Tarkovsky & Tetsuo

I have been invited to co-host and- DJ at Coco66 this evening in Greenpoint, from 8 - 2 am. Coco66 is located at 66 Greenpoint Ave, and there is no cover for the evening. It ends early, so for all of those that want to start slow and simmer all night long it is just might be a good place to ring in the new year than head on out for the debauchery later.

Here is what will be going down:

Coco66 is a Bar and Resturant that has good food and a warm atmosphere. I will be taking care of music for 2 parts of the evening, separated by my good friend Jule’s Jazz Quartet.  He’s been playing at Coco66 every tuesday for about a year and the band is in top form.

For the early evening sounds I’ll be bringing classic records by Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker and the like.  I’ve found some really amazing records lately and can’t wait to play them.

Following the jazz albums we will be switching it up, and Jules will be playing some salsa, jazz and other more latin flavors, as he is known to do. He is a classically trained Sax player from Miami, and he will be letting his musical roots grow deep.

As the night will progress, and the witching hour approches, we will be turning things towards the dark side, and we’ll be playing some Joy Division, New Order, Tones on Tail, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and that sort of thing. I will be throwing in some Aphex, Autechre, BOC, .snd, Willets, Byteone, Rob Model, Claro Intelecto, Monolake, … You get the idea.

And finally, for the late part of the evening, I’ll be DJing as Isomer Transition, playing released productions created under this moniker with new and unreleased tracks as well. It is a full-on DJ set unlike anything else you’ve heard from me.

For visuals for the evening we will be showing cinema classics by Andrei Tarkovsky and Tetsuo, presented in a way that you have never seen before. Truly exceptional.

Last weekend I curated and performed at a monthly event called “SINK”. Unfortunately the cops came and shut it down due to no liquor license. Here is a video of Burak’s visuals with some of what I was performing in the background.

Transelectronic Theory Live - 1997 NYC NYEX 10

No Love Live - Recorded early 1997

Title: No Love Live - NYC ‘97
Artist: Transelectronic Theory
Catalog Number: TRANS.005
Type: Live Performance
Year Recorded: 1997
Format: VBR MP3
Duration: 32 Minutes +- a few
Size: 65 meg
Link:

Back in the late ’90’s I was recording and releasing ‘underground’ diy cassettes, and later CDs, under the moniker of Transelectronic Theory. During that time I had played gigs at several raves on Long Island, as well as at a few of the NYEX parties that were going on at the time.

In January/February of 1997 I released “Sunrise” (which can be found as a digital re-issue in the downloads section), and this live set was, in a sense, a live performance of that style of music.

The promoter of the event was expecting me to play a techno set for some reason, not that I had any intent on doing that as Sunrise was anything but techno and this was the first live performance I was playing following the release of Sunrise.

To perform the set I brought out a bunch of hardware, some in a nice 8 space rack - Oberheim OB-1, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Alesis EFX units, Roland S-550 sampler, Yamaha TX81Z, DBX compressor, Alesis Microgate, a 22 channel mixer, and a few assorted stomp boxes. All of this was controlled by an old Powerbook 140 used for midi sequencing. The Powerbook was old school - it had a Motorola 68030 chip running at a massive 16 mhz. The whole thing was sequenced as patterns in Opcode’s Vision - so I could mute and un-mute parts, switch between the different patterns, copy and paste new patterns, all on the fly, and all via midi. The idea was for it to be as “live” as possible allowing me to explore each section and pattern, in order to work the crowd.

Well, there was some drama with the performance. There were some of the old school NY techno heads there, think mid-late ’90’s NYC techno and you’ll know who I am talking about, and they were saying shit like “That isn’t a live PA, he is using a computer” and shit. I took a beating from them. Not only did they bash on my live rig, they really weren’t into the music. Oh well. Sucks to be them, or at the time, it was sucking to be me.

On with the show. As soon as I started playing all of the party-goers decided to sit down and listen instead of dance. I guess that is what happens when you play an IDM set (although I hadn’t even heard of the term IDM at the time) at a techno party. About half way through the set the main promoter comes up to me and says “When are you done? You need to finish soon!” Shit! I had only been playing for 15 minutes at that time, and I had spent like 40 hours preparing for the gig! For the rest of the set he kept asking me “When are you done?!?” After a little more than 30 minutes of “torture” my set was over, and I must say, I was extremely happy with the performance, even if no one else was. Funny how that happens…

Hence the name “No Love Live in NYC”.

Listening back on the set I still find it quite enjoyable, even if it does sound like it is a little old. That is ok, it IS old, 11 years old to be exact.

I hope that you enjoy this recording of one of the finer Transelectronic Theory live performances.

Isomer Transition - Live from Halcyon, Dumbo

Title: All Mixed Up
Artist: Isomer Transition
Catalog Number: TRANS.004
Type: DJ Set
Year Recorded: 2006
Format: 238 kbps VBR MP3
Duration: 49:52
Size: 85.4 meg
Link:

This live performance was recorded in May 2006 at my friend Patrick Gallagher’s art opening at the Halcyon Record shop down in Dumbo Brooklyn. The idea behind the performance was to take a lot of my material from all of the different monikers I have produced under and do a DJ style Live PA with it. I did a lot of pre-production, culling tracks from as far back as 1995. No joke! I took loops from tracks recorded to DAT, to cassette, and random field recordings. It is a deep and dark heady journey through the transelectronic universe. The tracks used in this mix are from the upcoming “Mixtapes” and “Tapes and Trackers” series’ of releases scheduled for early April. The individual tracks will be available for download on this site then.
