RJ Valeo - Sunrise (Special Edtion) Now Available

January 6th, 2009

Artist: RJ Valeo
Title:
Sunrise
Catalog Number:
trans.003
Type:
Digital LP
Release Date: 08 December 2008
Duration: 60 minutes +
Purchase:RJ Valeo - Sunrise (Special Edition)

Originally released in Jan 1997 as “Transelectronic Theory - Sunrise”. Sunrise was recorded on the floor of my bedroom studio from September - November of 1996.

Looking back at this release, and listening to it again, I realized how one of the tracks was just out of place, so just like Lucas would have done, I took the opportunity to replace the track with one that was better suited from the same time period. The new track replaces the old one at the second to last place in the original track lineup. In addition I have included 1 additional track from the same time period. I would have included it initially, but I was limited to 60 minute cassettes and the songs simply didn’t fit, thus making this the definitive “Sunrise” release.

This release used hardware for all of the sounds. The partial gear list is: Korg Monopoly, Roland Juno 106, Roland S-550, Roland R-70, Roland TR 909, Korg Pandora, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Oberheim OB-1, Yamaha SY-22, Yamaha TX81Z, Alesis Midiverb and a few other pieces of gear.

All of the songs were done in the “performance to DAT” methodology, in which I would get all of my parts together and do a live performance of the song and capture it on DAT for the final version. So, in a simple sense all of these are “live takes” in the studio. The object of this release was to capture the feeling of a sunrise in sound - that magical moment when the sun shows itself for the first time in a day, and I think it managed to pull it off. I have put this release on my iPod and it seems to work well for a subway ride, or for some other activity that you can simply “be in the moment” for.

Isomer Transition mix on Samurai.FM

January 3rd, 2009

Thanks to Moodgadget I recently had a mix featured on Samurai.FM. To see where it is click on the image above and do a search for “Isomer”. It is a little hidden, and no “Transition” is on the page, but it is there. To make it easier to find, as well as portable, I have linked to it below on this page as well as posted the set list. Lots of new Isomer material in there - classics as well as unreleased tracks.

16+ tracks of isomer mixed together dj style… not a live pa, just a dj set. Can you believe it? Finally. :)

What is transelectronic?

January 2nd, 2009

I am uncomfortable talking about the music that I make. It isn’t something that I decided to do, it is my vocation. The music that I have been called to bring forth isn’t of a particular genre or style, it is called “transelectronic”.

I don’t actually make music, I just coax sounds and compositions to come out of the software and hardware that is in the Transelectronic Laboratory. I don’t make decisions about how the musics should be, I simply free them from the instruments they hide in. I don’t decide when something is done either, it is simply done is when it is done. I can’t take credit for the music that comes out of the Lab, as I feel I am always just a spectator to what is happening. I am merely a conduit for the music to be released. I am a student, and technology is the teacher.

Music is more than just sound, or a product. Music is art, and as such it doesn’t need to fit into a particular genre, or be easy to classify. Music should make you think, wait, and rewarded the listener for their attention. Music is refreshing when it sounds different. Music can be, and should be, at times, challenging to listen to. It should defy the listeners expectations and play with their ideas of standard motifs and mechanisms. Music can let you know what it is going to do, but keep you guessing as to when and how it will do it.

It can be hard to get to that place where everything stops and the moment simply is. It is that moment that the music that comes out of the Transelectronic Laboratory encourages. It is this state of being that all of efforts of the Lab are dedicated to.

NYC NYE Happening 2008 / 2009

December 31st, 2008

I know, late notice yet again. I think that is fine as this is for all those who are looking for an alternative to the traditional NYC NYE debauchery. I know that I am looking for one. And, keeping in tradition with my 2008 mantra of free IS good, tonight’s event is 100% free.

What: NYE NYC Happening
Cost: F-R-E-E
When: 8pm-2am
Where: Coco66, 66 Greenpoint Ave.
How: G train to Greenpoint Ave, walk two blocks towards the water. #66 on the left.
Directions: http://tinyurl.com/nycnye0809
Visuals: Saturated and Contrasted Series 1: Tarkovsky & Tetsuo

I have been invited to co-host and- DJ at Coco66 this evening in Greenpoint, from 8 - 2 am. Coco66 is located at 66 Greenpoint Ave, and there is no cover for the evening. It ends early, so for all of those that want to start slow and simmer all night long it is just might be a good place to ring in the new year than head on out for the debauchery later.

Here is what will be going down:

Coco66 is a Bar and Resturant that has good food and a warm atmosphere. I will be taking care of music for 2 parts of the evening, separated by my good friend Jule’s Jazz Quartet.  He’s been playing at Coco66 every tuesday for about a year and the band is in top form.

For the early evening sounds I’ll be bringing classic records by Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker and the like.  I’ve found some really amazing records lately and can’t wait to play them.

Following the jazz albums we will be switching it up, and Jules will be playing some salsa, jazz and other more latin flavors, as he is known to do. He is a classically trained Sax player from Miami, and he will be letting his musical roots grow deep.

As the night will progress, and the witching hour approches, we will be turning things towards the dark side, and we’ll be playing some Joy Division, New Order, Tones on Tail, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and that sort of thing. I will be throwing in some Aphex, Autechre, BOC, .snd, Willets, Byteone, Rob Model, Claro Intelecto, Monolake, … You get the idea.

And finally, for the late part of the evening, I’ll be DJing as Isomer Transition, playing released productions created under this moniker with new and unreleased tracks as well. It is a full-on DJ set unlike anything else you’ve heard from me.

For visuals for the evening we will be showing cinema classics by Andrei Tarkovsky and Tetsuo, presented in a way that you have never seen before. Truly exceptional.

Isomer Transition ‘1971′ on Moodgadget

Isomer Release

New Isomer release on NY based Moodgadet.
Available on iTunes, Beatport, Amazon, Boomkat and all other major digital retail outlets.

Boomkat says…

“Isomer Transition might be better known in certain quarters as RJ Valeo, the discerning IDM producer of Type Records and Hobby Industries derivation, but he’s been turning out quality dancefloor manoeuvres as Isomer Transition since his debut on Future Days back in 2006.

The 1971 EP is loaded with the sort of skilful production we’ve come to expect from Valeo’s work, and much of the material has a feel reminiscent of Minus’ recent output, although sadly that does include a smattering of the drearily obligatory detuned, tuneless, mumbling vocals. Still, you can forgive Valeo that sort of indiscretion given the quality of construction on show during ‘Mastery Of The Gravel’ and ‘Complex Undertow’.”

Richard J Valeo - Monday Night” on The Wire Tapper 20

October 22nd, 2008

I am proud to announce that one of my compositions from the “Days EP” for the Modyfier blog was selected for inclusion in the October edition of the UK’s venerable “The Wire” magazine. It is currently available at Other Music, Kim’s Video, and other places imported music magazines are sold. It is the one with Richie Hawtin on the cover.

Here is the little blurb they posted about me and my track.

07 Richard J Valeo Monday Night
From Days (IO)
Since 2001, Brooklyn’s Richard J Valeo has worked up his rhythmic fragmentary Techno under a variety of aliases including Transelectronic Theory, Isomer Transition and plain old RJ Valeo. Following his recent September album on Type Records, Days appears on his own imprint IO.

Wired: Future Musical Instruments

Sounds of Science: 8 Futuristic Musical Instruments

I love Wired magazine, I really do. They are always covering the current state of affairs with technology and culture, which inevitably bleeds into music. They’ve covered artists such as Thom Yorke and David Byrne, they have a [warranted] love affair with Brian Eno and they nominated of Jack Dangers, of Meat Beat Manifesto fame, as one of 2005’s Sexiest Geeks. They even reviewed The Orb back in 1994! Go Wired!

Currently Wired has turned it’s critical eye on Futuristic Musical Instruments. Keep in mind Wired is not Create Digital Music, nor are they Analog Industries, and they markedly missed noting the monome as one of the ‘must have’ instruments of the past few years, but they have managed to capture a lot of what is currently happening out there in the commercial musical instrument world. It is of noted interest that there are some very interesting links in the comments section as well.
